Who We Are

Our Spiritual Foundation
Unity’s Five Basic Principles
(Unity’s core teachings remain timeless and unchanged)

1. God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and
present everywhere.
2. We are spiritual beings, created in God’s image. The spirit of God lives within each
person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
3. We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
4. There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our awareness of God.
5. Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unity?

Unity is a spiritual movement and way of life that offers practical, positive teachings inspired
by the life and teachings of Jesus and grounded in universal spiritual principles.
We focus on applying spirituality to everyday life—supporting personal growth, inner healing,
meaningful relationships, and a deeper connection with the Divine. Unity is for people who are
curious, open-hearted, and seeking a spirituality that is empowering rather than dogmatic.
Unity communities exist worldwide and serve people from many religious backgrounds, as well
as those who do not identify with a religion at all.

What are Unity’s basic teachings?

Unity teaches that spiritual understanding grows through reflection, meditation, prayer, and
conscious living. We encourage individuals to explore these teachings in a way that resonates
with their own life experience and spiritual understanding.
There is no single “right” way to practice Unity—what matters most is how spirituality is lived,
expressed, and embodied.

Does Unity believe in the divinity of Jesus?

Yes. Unity teaches that Jesus was a fully awakened spiritual teacher who expressed the Divine
nature within him—and that this same Divine presence lives within every person.
Jesus is honored as a great way-shower, demonstrating what is possible when we live from love,
compassion, and spiritual awareness.

Is Unity a denomination?

Unity is not a traditional denomination. It is best described as a spiritual movement within
the New Thought tradition.

Unity has churches and spiritual centers, but it does not require specific creeds or beliefs. People
often come to Unity from many religious backgrounds—or none at all—and are encouraged to
think, question, and grow.

What is Unity’s relationship to other churches or faith traditions?

Unity is inclusive and interfaith-friendly. We honor the wisdom found in many spiritual
traditions and see Unity as a resource for inspiration, education, and prayer—whether or not
Unity is someone’s primary spiritual home.

Is Unity connected to Unitarianism?

No. Despite the similarity in names, Unity and Unitarian Universalism are separate and distinct
organizations, each with its own history, teachings, and practices.

Is Unity an offshoot of Christian Science?

No. While Unity and Christian Science both emerged during the New Thought movement of the
late 19th century, they differ significantly in theology, practice, and organizational structure.

What role does the Bible play in Unity?

The Bible is an important spiritual resource in Unity and is often used in teaching and study.
Unity approaches the Bible metaphysically, meaning we look beyond literal interpretations to
uncover spiritual principles that apply to daily life today.

Does Unity practice baptism and communion?

Yes—symbolically and spiritually.

Baptism represents an inner awakening and alignment with Spirit.

Communion represents conscious remembrance of our oneness with God through prayer,

meditation, and spiritual awareness.

These practices emphasize inner transformation rather than ritual requirements.

What does Unity teach about sin, salvation, heaven, and hell?

Unity understands these ideas as states of consciousness rather than external judgments or
places.
Sin is seen as missing the mark—temporarily forgetting our spiritual nature.
Salvation is an ongoing, present-moment experience of awakening to truth, love, and
wholeness.
Heaven and hell are states of mind created by our thoughts, beliefs, and choices.
Transformation happens here and now, as we consciously choose love, peace, and spiritual truth.

In Short…
Unity is a place for spiritual seekers, question-askers, deep thinkers, and open hearts—wherever you are on your spiritual journey.
